Project Overview

Air Force Aircraft

Selfridge Air National Guard Base (ANGB) is a diverse military installation in the United States and is dedicated to training the Air National Guard (ANG) and other reserve components of the military services. It is the only Reserve Forces Base to host active-duty units of five armed services, and all reserve components of the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force. Selfridge is home to the 127 Wing (WG); whose primary mission is to provide trained, equipped, and motivated air refueling, fighter, and support resources serving the community, state, and nation. As part of the Federal mission, the ANG provides operationally ready combat and combat support units, along with qualified personnel for active duty in the DAF to fulfill war contingency commitments.

To enact the mission of the127 WG, Selfridge operates a A-10 Thunderbolt II C fighter squadron (18 planes) and a refueling squadron consisting of 8 KC-135 Stratotankers. The Department of the Air Force (DAF) has identified that the A-10s are to be recapitalize (phased out of service by the Department of Defense [DoD]) and the KC-135s replaced with the newer KC-46 Pegasus. The proposed transition is to improve how the ANG aligns with the DAF to support the National Defense Strategy as the A-10 and KC-135 aircraft are retired from the DAF inventory.

This reallocation of planes at Selfridge ANGB will require either the modification of existing structures and infrastructure or new construction on the base. The KC-46 would utilize existing military airspace and military training ranges and is not anticipated to result in an increase in personnel as the base acquires the KC-46 aircraft.

On April 29 8, 2025, President Trump announced the F-15 EX Eagle II aircraft will replace the A-10 Thunderbolt II.

To analyze the impacts associated with these actions at Selfridge ANG and surrounding areas, the ANG will prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to evaluate potential environmental consequences (adverse and beneficial) associated with establishing the replacing of the KC-135 Stratotankers with the KC-46 Pegasus and the beddown F-15EXs.
